Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 431c3a7492 Every error response in the { error, code, details? } format (step 2)
Moves every remaining hand-built error response onto ApiError: ~300
sites across faces, image, video, files, memories, versions,
duplicates, favorites, libraries, auth, clip/unified search, prefs,
reels, tts, insight chat, persona chat, knowledge and personas.

- 500s: the body was the error's text (anyhow / diesel / {:?}); now
  ApiError::internal logs it and sends a generic message.
- Each 4xx/502/503 has a stable code and a message written for users;
  statuses are unchanged. Shared helpers per module (faces_unavailable,
  person_not_found, unknown_library, insight_not_found, ...).
- Pre-format top-level fields kept where clients read them: upload 409
  duplicate_of / content_hash / library_name.
- PersonaChatError converts into ApiError in one place.
- Multipart upload errors use the format (error::multipart_config).
- Guard test: no non-test code builds HttpResponse::<error>() by hand.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 ccead2d7c0 chore: keep real names out of code and tests
The daily-summary cleaner hard-coded two contacts' names in its opening
phrases; a pattern now strips "Today, <Name> and I discussed" for any
contact (with a test). Video path tests use a neutral folder name.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 080a75c336 feat(versions): link at ingest, hide in listings, version endpoints
XMP (PNG iTXt DerivedFrom, native chunk reader) then file-name convention
links at ingest; unlinked name candidates are retried each tick. Versions
are hidden from /photos (SQL for the recursive listing, hidden-row set for
the walk and tag branches), /memories, reels, /photos/exif, the GPS summary,
unified search and the media gauges while their original is reachable in the
view; include_versions=true lists them. /photos gains the parallel arrays
photo_display_paths / photo_version_counts, memories / search hits /
/photos/exif rows gain display_path / version_count, all skipped when empty.
GET /image/versions and PUT /image/versions/display (library optional).
Tags and favorites on a version path bind to the original; faces, CLIP and
duplicate grouping skip version hashes; insight generation redirects to the
original. Orphan GC and the back-ref refresh cover the new tables.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 94a566b220 feat(image): add a 1024px size=medium preview tier
Grid and memories tiles requested `size=large` (up to 2048px) for tiles
that display at ~590px (two columns) to ~1180px (one full-width column)
on a 3× phone, downloading 10–15× the pixels they show. `medium` caps
the long edge at 1024: crisp at both, a quarter of `large`'s pixels.
Cached under `_medium/` like the other tiers.

The large and xlarge generators were copies differing only in their
cap; fold them into one `generate_preview(src, dest, max_dim)` so the
third tier doesn't make a third copy.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 fbc9882364 fix(image): label thumbnails by their bytes, not the source's name
Legacy thumbnail and preview paths mirror the source's relative path, so
a video's JPEG thumbnail lives at `…/clip.mp4` and a RAW's at
`…/shot.arw`. NamedFile guessed the content type from that name and
served JPEG bytes as `video/mp4`. Sniff JPEG/PNG magic bytes instead.

The circular-thumbnail path had the same root cause: `image::open`
picks the decoder from the extension, so it failed on those thumbs and
quietly fell back to the square one. Guess the format from the bytes.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 c0e6a68ca4 fix(video): keep signed stream tokens out of logs and traces
The access log and the tracing root span's http.target both recorded the
full /video/original/stream?token=… URL, i.e. a credential for a
possibly sensitive file, in the journal and OTel exports. An outermost
middleware now moves the token into request extensions and rewrites the
URI to token=redacted before either logger sees it; the handler reads
the token from extensions and fails closed (401) without the middleware.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 40c33c41a6 feat(video): short-lived signed URLs for original-quality playback
POST /video/original mints a URL for one video's original bytes, signed
with a key derived from SECRET_KEY (distinct from the login-token key)
and valid for 6 hours. GET /video/original/stream?token= serves it via
NamedFile, so Range/seek works, without an Authorization header — native
players can use it directly. HLS stays the default path.

Also extracts generate_video's library fallback into resolve_request_path
and fixes the stale /video/stream entry in CLAUDE.md.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 38ac3656c6 fix(image): never stream originals into thumb slots; unique preview tempfiles
A thumb miss (no thumb on disk, or an `.unsupported` sentinel) fell
through to NamedFile on the original. For a 12432x3504 panorama that
decodes to 174MB, past Android's 100MB draw limit, and crashed the
FileViewer app natively on the Memories tab. Still-image thumb misses
now serve the 2048px large preview, or 404 if even that can't be made.

Large/xlarge generation wrote to a shared `<dest>.jpg.tmp`, so two
concurrent requests for the same file (common: tile remounts) raced and
the loser's rename failed with os error 2, falling back to the original.
Generation now goes through a per-call tempfile, and a failed request
still serves a preview a concurrent request produced.

Large and xlarge branches are folded into one `serve_preview` helper.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 9269b5c9fd Dates: true_instant on metadata responses for instant matching
The mobile viewer anchored its "messages around this photo" window on
the legacy date_taken (a wall clock stored as UTC for EXIF rows), while
SMS-API dates are true instants: the window was off by the photo's UTC
offset (4-5 h for photos taken at home; ImageApi #113 user story 3).
Verified SMS-API side: importers store backup epochs as UTC, and 40/40
sampled rows equal their source epochs exactly.

`/image/metadata` (+ GPS / date mutation responses) now carries
`true_instant` from `date_view::file_true_instant`: `row_true_instant`,
else the filename-class instant, else the earliest fs time. Server-side
for the same reason as `wall_clock`: the drain's permanent floor rows
have no `date_utc`. `set_capture_dates` fills both fields at all four
response sites.

dev/e2e: the manifest records each fixture's expected instant (the wall
read in its GPS zone, else America/New_York) and `e2e.sh check` asserts
it (97/97).

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 e2f33684c8 Dates: serve the display wall clock (wall_clock) to clients
Every payload a client renders a capture time from now carries
`wall_clock`, a naive ISO-8601 string computed by the existing
`date_view::row_display_wall`: the camera's wall clock (true instant +
camera offset; the owner's display zone without an offset), with the
per-source fallback for unconverted rows. Clients render it verbatim and
do no zone math, which is the FileViewer-React #33 / Apollo #37 flip with
the rule kept server-side: the drain's permanent `date_utc IS NULL` floor
(#120: edited/exported files) would otherwise force every client to
carry the per-source legacy conventions forever, and insight prompts
already use the same function, so prompt and UI agree by construction.

- `/image/metadata` (+ the GPS / date / date-clear mutation responses):
  `file_wall_clock` — the row's wall, else the filename-class date, else
  the earliest fs time in the display zone (unindexed files).
- `/memories` items and `/photos/gps-summary` photos: `row_wall_clock`.
- `get_all_with_gps` returns full rows instead of a 7-tuple that dropped
  `date_taken_source`, which unconverted rows need.
- `date_view::owner_display_zone` resolves prefs -> app default per request.

Legacy fields are untouched, so current clients see byte-identical
responses (additive; safe to deploy ahead of the client flip, per #120).

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 5.5 b6deca2a52 Tracing: DAO layer + handler spans on tracing, drop all Context params (#141)
trace_db_call no longer takes an OpenTelemetry Context: it opens a
db.<query_type>.<operation> span (same name via otel.name, same
db.query_type / db.operation attrs) on the caller's ambient tracing span
and runs the DAO body inside it. The cx / ctx / context parameter is gone
from every DAO trait method, impl and call site, and from the helpers and
background drains that only threaded it.

The remaining request-handler spans (files, tags, faces, image, video,
favorites, duplicates, memories) move to #[instrument]; the
Context::current_with_span / with_remote_span_context plumbing is gone, as
is extract_context_from_request (the tracing-actix-web root span covers
it). otel::set_span_attributes replaces BoxedSpan::set_attributes.

Background-job raw spans (thumbnails, video actors) are left for #142.

tests/otel_db_spans.rs pins name, attributes, status and nesting (across
an instrumented spawn); otel_traceparent now uses an #[instrument]
handler. CLAUDE.md documents the tracing conventions.

Cameron Cordes a97bf53603 feat(dates): filename date class — per-pattern conventions + filename-over-EXIF priority (#116)
The filename date class is now first-class (ADR-0001):

- memories::extract_date_from_filename returns FilenameDate:
  Wall(NaiveDateTime) for the screenshot/dash/compact patterns,
  Utc(DateTime<Utc>) for the unix-timestamp patterns. No patterns
  added or removed; every existing pattern carries its convention.
- Waterfall inversion in both resolve_date_taken and
  resolve_dates_batch: an in-class name is the original date of
  record and resolves BEFORE EXIF / container dates are consulted
  (shared filename_class_resolved step; in-class files skip
  exiftool entirely). Wall patterns run the offset cascade over the
  kamadak prior's evidence (empty evidence -> server-zone
  assumption, so a class file always resolves); timestamp patterns
  are true instants (tz_source utc_direct, no offset).
- Legacy date_taken stays byte-identical: wall-as-UTC for wall
  patterns, epoch for timestamp patterns, via
  FilenameDate::legacy_datetime / legacy_timestamp at the seven
  consumer call sites.
- Out-of-class files keep the global EXIF-wins waterfall unchanged.
- CLAUDE.md waterfall section rewritten (step 0 = filename class;
  the EXIF-beats-filename note becomes out-of-class-only).

Tests: five new waterfall-seam tests (wall no-evidence ->
assumed_server; wall outranks EXIF with offset-tag evidence;
wall GPS evidence; timestamp utc_direct; in-class video name
resolves without exiftool) plus enum-shape assertions in every
extractor test. Code-reviewed on both axes (standards: no
violations, 3 of 4 P2 notes applied; spec: all acceptance
criteria verified, no scope creep).

716 integration + 639 lib tests pass; fmt + clippy clean.

Cameron Cordes d2263be6ac feat(dates): container video dates, filesystem branch, manual edit (#115)
The exiftool branch of the date waterfall now pulls raw strings with
group prefixes (one `exiftool -j -q -G1` subprocess per batch, no
`-d %s`) and classifies each candidate:

- zoned strings (own offset / Z) are true instants;
- naive strings from container groups (QuickTime/Track*/Apple) are
  UTC-rendered creation_time fields -> true instants (utc_direct).
  Running them through the camera wall-clock cascade was the
  "videos off by 4-5 hours" bug: it reinterpreted a UTC instant in
  the server zone;
- naive strings from photo-EXIF groups are camera wall clocks and run
  the offset cascade (OffsetTime* pairing + GPS evidence pulled in
  the same exiftool pass).

The legacy date_taken column stays byte-identical to the old
server-local interpretation (reproduced in Rust, DST-aware); the
new-contract date_utc / camera_offset_minutes / date_taken_tz_source
columns carry the true instant.

Manual date edit (POST /image/exif/date) reinterprets the
naive-as-UTC epoch the client sent as a wall clock in the user's
display zone (camera_tz::manual_date_resolution, tz_source =
'manual'), snapshots the pre-override new-contract triple next to the
existing legacy snapshot pair (3 new columns, migration
2026-09-25-000000), and revert restores both pairs.

ADR-0001 records the container-date finding; CLAUDE.md date-pipeline
section updated.

Cameron Cordes 2f2107d4fa feat(dates): foundation for the true-instant date contract (#114)
Populate the new-contract date columns at ingest while keeping the
legacy date_taken column byte-identical (ADR-0001):

- camera_tz module: offset cascade (offset tag -> GPS zone -> server
  zone) as a pure, testable function; bundled offline TZF geometry for
  GPS -> IANA resolution; DST-correct offsets for the capture date;
  display-zone helpers (DEFAULT_DISPLAY_TZ, display_zone_for,
  display_zone_offset_minutes) for the read-side cutover.
- EXIF branch: kamadak-exif now collects OffsetTime* tags paired with
  the winning date tag; resolve_date_taken takes an ExifPrior and
  emits (date_utc, camera_offset_minutes, date_taken_tz_source) per
  branch: exif -> cascade, exiftool/fs_time -> utc_direct, filename
  -> unclassified (pending #116).
- Schema: migration adds image_exif.date_utc /
  camera_offset_minutes / date_taken_tz_source and
  user_ai_prefs.display_tz (all nullable; down.sql drops them).
- DAO + ingest: backfill_date_taken persists the triple alongside the
  legacy pair; watcher, upload, and set_image_gps call sites feed the
  cascade.
- Response surface: ExifMetadata and ExifSummary carry the triple so
  /image/metadata and /photos/exif expose it (null for unconverted
  rows); reel requests mirror display_tz into prefs.

cargo build + clippy clean; 625 lib + 702 bin tests pass (the one
failing doctest in utils.rs is pre-existing at the base commit).

Cameron Cordes f707353807 feat: nightly agentic pre-generation of memory reels
Implement end-to-end nightly pre-generation of memory reels with agentic
scripting that grounds narration in calendar, location, messages, and RAG.

Sections A-E from the plan:

A. Extract produce_reel pipeline core from run_reel_job with
   ScripterMode::Fast/Agentic and progress callbacks.

B. Agentic scripter: factor run_readonly_tool_loop from the insight
   generator, build read-only tool gate, prompt builder with GPS, and
   generate_script_agentic with fallback to fast path.

C. Precomputed reels ledger (SQLite table + DAO), GET /reels/precomputed
   handler with validity gate, GET /reels/by-key/{key}/video streaming,
   and normalize_library_key helper.

D. Nightly scheduler: spawn_pregen_scheduler with configurable hour,
   run_pregen_batch (day/week/month spans), pregen_one with dedup and
   disk-check, secs_until_next_run_hour time math.

E. user_ai_prefs passive mirror table + DAO for param capture in
   create_reel_handler and replay in the scheduler.

Also fixes resolve_library_param signature to take &[Library] and adds
resolve_library_param_state wrapper for AppState callers.

New files: migrations/2026-06-13-000000_add_precomputed_reels/,

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 4.8 16ae82ba70 Normalize video rel_path lookup to forward slashes on Windows
generate_video built the rel_path for its image_exif lookup by stripping
the library root from the absolute path, leaving backslashes on Windows
(Melissa\clip.mp4). file_scan stores rel_paths forward-slash and
get_exif_batch matches exactly with no normalization, so the lookup
missed and the handler re-hashed the entire video file on every request.

Extract rel_path_for_lookup and normalize separators with replace('\\',
'/'). Adds tests for Windows/Unix separators, file-at-root, leading
separator stripping, and the no-match fallback.

cameronandClaude Opus 4.7 b9175e2718 image: add xlarge (4096px) on-demand preview tier
New `PhotoSize::XLarge` variant sits between `Large` (2048px) and
`Full` (original). On-demand generated and disk-cached at
`_xlarge/<hash>.jpg`, same waterfall as `Large` (embedded RAW preview
→ ffmpeg → image crate). Sources below 4096px serve at native size.

Reduces decoded bitmap memory from ~192MB (48MP full) to ~64MB for
the mobile viewer's zoom tier.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 4.7 19798184f0 image: add on-demand size=large preview tier (~2048px JPEG q85)
Adds a third PhotoSize between Thumb (200px) and Full (original). The
viewer placeholder and map callout previously upscaled a 200px thumb
into a full-screen / full-width view, which looked visibly blocky on
3× devices. The new tier is generated on-demand, disk-cached, and
served via the existing /image endpoint.

Storage layout mirrors the Thumb branch's lookup chain:
  1. hash-keyed: <thumbs>/_large/<hash[..2]>/<hash>.jpg (shared across
     libraries when content_hash is known)
  2. library-scoped legacy: <thumbs>/_large/<lib_id>/<rel_path>

Generation pipeline mirrors generate_image_thumbnail:
  - RAW: decode the embedded JPEG preview, apply EXIF orientation,
         resize to 2048-long-edge, encode JPEG q85
  - HEIC/HEIF: ffmpeg with scale + q:v 5 (≈ q85)
  - everything else: image crate decode + thumbnail() + JpegEncoder
Never upscales — sources below the 2048 cap re-encode at native size.

Handler offloads decode/resize to web::block to keep the actix worker
free (a 24MP source takes 100–500ms). Writes via tempfile+rename so
concurrent readers can't observe a half-written JPEG. On any
generation failure, falls through to the Full branch (which itself
serves the RAW embedded preview for unrenderable RAW containers).

Video requests for size=large fall back to the existing thumb pipeline
since there's no useful 2048px video tier.

CameronandClaude Opus 4.7 1b70a6f0b4 video: probe frame rate via ffprobe and return on /video/generate
Adds frame_rate to GenerateVideoResponse so the mobile scrubber can step
at the source's real fps instead of a hardcoded 30. probe_video_stream_meta
gains a frame_rate field (avg_frame_rate preferred, r_frame_rate fallback,
nonsense values rejected) and is now pub so the handler can reuse it.
Cost is one ffprobe per /video/generate call; degrades silently to None
on probe failure.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 4.7 0168a4b574 hls: remove legacy /video/stream + /video/{path} routes
The hash-keyed `/video/hls/{hash}/{file}` route fully covers HLS
playback now and both clients (Apollo, FileViewer-React) have
shipped updates that use it directly. Keeping the basename-keyed
fallback only encouraged stale URLs to keep flowing — every legacy
file was deleted by the startup migration, so the routes were
guaranteed 404 machines.

Dropped:
- `stream_video` handler (`GET /video/stream?path=…`) — the original
  basename-keyed playlist serve.
- `get_video_part` handler (`GET /video/{path}`) — bare-filename
  segment serve. The new layout's segments live in
  `<shard>/<hash>/segment_NNN.ts` and reach the client via
  `stream_hls_file`.
- `legacy_path` field on `GenerateVideoResponse` (serialised as
  `playlist`). The field always pointed at a file the migration had
  deleted; current clients ignore it entirely.
- Their service registrations in `main.rs`.
- The body-side `filename` extraction in `generate_video` (existed
  only to construct `legacy_path`) and the now-unused `global`
  opentelemetry import in `handlers/video.rs`.

All 707 tests still pass. Same hand-rolled validators (`is_valid_hash`
/ `is_allowed_hls_filename`) keep the new route's defense-in-depth
intact.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 4.7 8503ef7884 chore: cargo fmt + clippy --fix sweep across the crate
Pure mechanical cleanup of accumulated drift in files outside the
HLS-content-hash branch's main change set. No behavior change.

- `cargo fmt` on every previously-misformatted file
  (`ai/insight_generator.rs`, `database/knowledge_dao.rs`,
  `faces.rs`, `knowledge.rs`, `libraries.rs`).
- `cargo clippy --fix`:
  - `needless_borrow`: `&library` → `library` in `handlers/image.rs`
    (two sites in the photo-listing path).
- Manual clippy pass for warnings clippy emits but can't auto-apply:
  - `field_reassign_with_default` in `database/reconcile.rs::run` —
    consolidated into a struct-literal initializer.
  - `needless_range_loop` in `database/knowledge_dao.rs::union_perceptual_tags`
    — inner `for b in (a+1)..indices.len() { let ib = indices[b]; ... }`
    becomes `for &ib in &indices[a + 1..] { ... }`.
  - Doc-list indentation: continuation lines under nested bullets in
    `database/mod.rs::get_memories_in_window` and
    `database/knowledge_dao.rs::build_entity_graph` realigned to the
    list-item content column.

Deliberately not touched (each deserves its own focused commit, with
testing, rather than getting bundled into a sweep):
- 4× `deprecated count_distinct` in `faces.rs` — diesel API migration
  to `AggregateExpressionMethods::aggregate_distinct` may shift result
  types; needs verification against the existing stats queries.
- `await_holding_lock` in `knowledge.rs:807` — `std::sync::Mutex` held
  across `ollama.generate(...).await`. Genuine concurrency bug; fix
  requires understanding the surrounding flow before just dropping
  the guard.
- 2× `type_complexity` in `database/mod.rs` — cosmetic, would need a
  `type` alias and corresponding callers updated.
- Dead `total_deleted` on `library_maintenance::GcStats` and
  `file_scan::enumerate_indexable_files` — both are public surface
  retained for future use; deletion is a separate decision.

All 707 tests still pass. Release build clean.

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 4.7 7c153596fe hls: hash-keyed HTTP routes for /video/generate and serving
`POST /video/generate` is reshaped to return a JSON object instead of
a bare string. New fields:

- `playlist_url`: stable hash-keyed URL of the form
  `/video/hls/<hash>/playlist.m3u8`. Use this with hls.js / native
  players — relative segment refs inside the playlist resolve to
  `/video/hls/<hash>/segment_NNN.ts` because the URL is path-based.
- `content_hash`: the blake3 hex digest that identifies the bytes.
  Stable across libraries, archive ingests, renames; clients can
  cache the URL by hash.
- `ready`: true iff the playlist file is already on disk. False means
  a transcode was just queued; the client should retry the URL after
  a short delay (or rely on hls.js's built-in retry).
- `playlist` (legacy): basename-keyed path string, echoed under the
  old field name so clients that destructure `response.playlist` keep
  working during the rollout. The startup migration deletes the
  underlying file, so this URL will 404; clients should migrate to
  `playlist_url`. Field is slated for removal once Apollo / File
  Viewer ship the update.

The handler:
- resolves the source path across libraries (same logic as before),
- looks up `image_exif.content_hash` for that (library_id, rel_path),
- falls back to inline `content_hash::compute` when the row is mid-
  backfill — pure read, no library mutation,
- sends a single-element `QueueVideosMessage` to `VideoPlaylistManager`
  if the playlist isn't already on disk and there's no
  `playlist.unsupported` sentinel,
- returns the URL immediately. The actor pipeline owns transcoding.

New route `GET /video/hls/{hash}/{file}`:
- strict validation: hash must be 64 ascii-hex chars; file must be
  `playlist.m3u8` or `segment_NNN.ts` (digits only). Anything else
  returns 400 so we never have to rely on path canonicalisation
  alone to defend against traversal,
- belt-and-suspenders canonicalize() guard verifies the resolved
  file lives under `$VIDEO_PATH`,
- serves with the standard `NamedFile::into_response` machinery.

Cleanup in `actors.rs`:
- `ProcessMessage` + its `StreamActor` handler had no senders after
  the rewire — removed. `StreamActor` itself stays (still handles
  `RefreshThumbnailsMessage` from `files.rs`).
- `create_playlist`, `playlist_file_for`,
  `playlist_unsupported_sentinel` are gone — the legacy on-demand
  transcode helper and the migration-only path helpers had no
  remaining users (the migration uses its own classify() function).
- Imports tightened: dropped `Child`, `ExitStatus`, `trace`.

Tests cover both new validators (`is_valid_hash`,
`is_allowed_hls_filename`) including the strings that motivated the
defence-in-depth (traversal attempts, internal `.tmp`/`.unsupported`
artifacts, malformed segment names).

Cameron CordesandClaude Opus 4.7 bdb69c7d37 Split main.rs: extract HTTP handlers into src/handlers/
main.rs drops from 2935 → 1200 lines, freed for startup wiring +
the watcher. The 16 route handlers move into three domain-grouped
files under src/handlers/:

- handlers/favorites.rs (128 lines): favorites, put_add_favorite,
  delete_favorite.

- handlers/video.rs (665 lines): generate_video, stream_video,
  get_video_part, get_video_preview, get_preview_status. The 5
  pre-existing get_preview_status integration tests move with the
  handler (still pass against TestPreviewDao + AppState::test_state).

- handlers/image.rs (1003 lines): get_image (with the
  hash/library-scoped/bare-legacy thumb lookup), upload_image,
  get_file_metadata, set_image_gps, get_full_exif, set_image_date,
  clear_image_date. Helpers (create_circular_thumbnail,
  build_metadata_response_for_date_mutation) and request structs
  (SetGpsRequest, SetDateRequest, ClearDateRequest, UploadQuery)
  travel with them.

main.rs's import block shrinks from ~50 lines to ~22 as everything
HTTP-specific (NamedFile, mp::Multipart, BytesMut, Span, KeyValue,
StreamExt, …) moves with the handlers. The is_video_file wrapper
also goes — remaining callers in watch_files / cleanup use
file_types::is_video_file directly.

cargo test --bin image-api: 325 passing (no regression).
